Chapter 1
This story is about a doctor who used to live and practice in a village in Punjab. His village was about 30 kilometres from the nearest city. Bus service was available from his village to the city. He was a good doctor and treated the patients with care and most of the villagers knew him.
He visited the city over weekends in order to purchase medicines for villagers. He used to leave his village by the morning bus and after purchasing all the needful stuff used to return by the evening bus. He also had relatives in the city where he used to have his lunch.
One weekend as per schedule he left his home by the morning bus and went to the city. After purchasing all the medicines and needful stuff, went to his relatives’ place for lunch. He was feeling tired that day so after having lunch he decided to take a nap.
When he woke up, it was almost 7 PM. He had overslept by 2 hours and missed the last bus to his village that used to leave at around 5.30 PM from the city.
Relatives requested him to stay for that night as it was almost dark and that he had missed the bus. But the doctor insisted on returning back with his purchases as patients will be coming to his clinic from morning itself.
Chapter 2
The doctor reached the bus stop by 7.30 PM, but no vehicle was available for his village. After waiting for an hour he caught a shared taxi. The taxi was going to a nearby village that was still about 10 kilometres away from his village. He decided to walk the remaining distance and if lucky can even get a lift from a passing vehicle.
When he reached the nearby village it was about 10 PM. As no vehicles were going to his village during that time of the night he decided to walk the remaining distance.
After walking 2-3 kilometres towards his village along the road, he saw an accident that had barely happened a few minutes ago between a truck and a tractor. The accident was so brutal that the driver of the tractor got killed and his body was stuck in the debris.
There were some more local people that assembled and all were trying to help the injured persons. The doctor went there and helped others in removing the body of tractor’s driver. They also informed police about the accident.
It was almost 11.30 PM by then, the doctor decided to continue walking towards his village. While waking he felt that someone was following him. Suddenly he heard a voice requesting him to wait. He saw a young man in his twenties approaching him. This man then started a conversation with the doctor and they both started walking towards the village.
Chapter 3
There were wheat fields on both sides of the road and the area was quite dark. The doctor was unable to see the face of the person but they were having a conversation about his purchases and other topics. A vehicle was coming from the opposite direction and in its headlight doctor was able to observe the face of the person for the first time.
It seemed to the doctor, that he has seen the person but was not able to recollect where he has seen him. They both walked and only 2 kilometres were left to his village. The doctor suddenly recognized the face of the person walking beside him.
It was the same person, the driver of the tractor whose body he had helped in removing from the mangled body of the tractor. Suddenly the man walking with him shouted in a harsh voice to remove the locket that doctor was wearing.
The doctor thought how this man knew that he is wearing a locket as it was under his shirt and that he was also wearing a shawl and there is no way anyone could see the locket. The locket doctor was wearing was sacred and also had a picture of his guru.
Chapter 4
The doctor increased his speed of walking, and again heard the voice of the person, this time even harsher and ordered him to remove his locket. The doctor observed that the man was trying to come near him to snatch the locket but he was not able to do so.
The doctor increased his pace of walking further along with his purchases and observed that the man was no longer walking beside him. He looked back and saw the man standing at some distance.
The man with his harsh voice shouted again, ‘You have been saved by the locket today; otherwise, I would have taken you with me’. The doctor was much tensed, and his heart was pounding, he was sweating profusely.
He managed to reach his home and the first thing he did was to pray to God that his life has been saved today. If he had not worn the sacred locket, it would have been the last day of his life.
