Assam is a north-eastern state in India situated south of the eastern Himalayas along the Brahmaputra and Barak River valleys. It is bordered by Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh to the north, Nagaland and Manipur to the east and Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram and Bangladesh to the south.
Assam is one of the richest biodiversity zones in the world and consists of tropical rainforests. This place is also home for deciduous forests, riverine grasslands, bamboo orchards and numerous wetland ecosystems. Rich in culture and history this place is rich in flora and fauna as well.
Assam has many wildlife sanctuaries Kaziranga National Park, on the bank of the Brahmaputra River, and the Manas Wildlife Sanctuary, near the border with Bhutan are the most visited forests for its rich bio-diversity. The Kaziranga is a refuge for the fast-disappearing Indian one-horned rhinoceros apart from home to many endangered species.
Kaziranga
Kaziranga National Park is located in the north-eastern part of India in between the district of Golaghat and Nagoan. This National Park is spread across 430 square kilometres with the river Brahmaputra flowing on one side and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Due to the fertile plains of Brahmaputra, the park presents a massive range of natural beauty with varied flora and fauna.
This National Park is home to around two-third of endangered one-horned Indian rhinos. This park also has large breeding populations of elephants, wild water buffalo and swamp deer. Kaziranga is also recognized as an important bird area by Birdlife International for the varied type of birds species found here. In 2006 this National Park was declared as a Tiger Reserve due to its high density of tigers.
With its amazing wildlife conservation activities, the park has successfully managed to grow the population of one-horned rhino. Enormous expanse of tall grass, marshland, and dense tropical moist broadleaf forests undoubtedly makes the park look beautiful and is home to many habitats of plants and animals. In addition to grasses and forests, Kaziranga National Park includes abundant cover of water lilies, water hyacinth and lotus.
By Air: The nearest airport to Kaziranga National Park is Jorhat Airport, located at the distance of 100 kilometres from the park. But there are limited flights to Jorhat. Hence traveller can land at Guwahati International Airport located at a distance of about 220 kilometres and hire a cab to visit the park directly or can avail bus from the Paltan Bazar Bus Stand.
By Rail: The best way for travellers to reach Kaziranga National Park by rail is Guwahati railway station or Jorhat railway station located at the distance of 240 km and 98 km respectively. Both of these are the major railway stations and are well connected to most parts of India. One can avail a cab or can take a bus from Guwahati.
By Road: Kaziranga National Park is well connected by road to all the nearby cities. One can reach Kaziranga National Park from places like Guwahati, Jorhat, Nagoan, Tezpur etc. The roads are in good condition and travel time depends upon distance from origin.
Nature Hunt Eco Camp: This resort is peaceful and clean. Situated on the highway but free from the noise and dust. The rooms comprise of traditional Assamese cottages and tents with basic amenities. The staff is helpful and food is nice. They help in booking for safari as per traveller demands. They have a tea garden inside and lot of greenery around.
IORA-The Retreat: This resort is spread over few acres and is about 4 kilometres to the Kaziranga Central Range. The rooms are very well maintained. staff are very prompt in their service and are very helpful. There are two restaurants, one of them serves local delicacies. There is also one bar and a spa. They help in arranging Elephant Safari. They also have a game zone that is really enjoyable for children.
Koliabur Manor: This resort is situated on the banks of Brahmaputra, and other side is hill covered with tea garden. Two suites with well equipped kitchen, a British style bungalow with 4 rooms and private kitchen, a village style bamboo restaurant with bar that serves authentic food and some exotic meals, infinity swimming pool with breathtaking view of mighty Brahmaputra. Rooms are clean and staff is very helpful.
Resort Borgos: This resort is situated close to the Kaziranga Central Range. With well appointed and clean rooms with balcony having all the amenities with nice and helpful staff. This resort has a bar and the Restaurant has both buffet and a la carts menu and the food is nice. Service excellent. The resort arranges both elephant and Jeep safaris to the range.
Kaziranga National Park remains open for visitors from 1st November to 30th April.
Safari are administered by the forest officials. Safaris are organised in Jeeps and Elephants.
The forest is divided into 4 Zones and jeep safaris are organised for each zones however the elephant safari are conducted in only 2 zones they are Kohora Zone and Bagori Zone.
Morning Jeep-Safari: 08:00 Hrs. to 10:00 Hrs.
Afternoon Jeep-Safari: 14:00 Hrs. to 16:00 Hrs.
Elephant Safari: 05:30 Hrs. to 8:00 Hrs.
