About 3x3 Basketball
3×3 Basketball game is played by two teams having 3 members on each side on a single basketball hoop. This format of the basketball is organised and governed by FIBA (Fèdèration Internationale de Basketball Amateur) and is the largest urban team sport of the world. FIBA also organises men and women 3×3 Basketball world cups.
This game is played by men and women. Both men’s and women’s 3×3 basketball would be making their debut in Olympics of Tokyo 2020.

History
The format of 3×3 Basketball game has been there since the mid-1980s. This sport originated due to the constraint of players and basketball hoops in and around the locality.
Played mainly in gyms, streets and prison campuses it got a boost when Adidas got associated with the sport in 1992 and the game became popular.
Objective
3×3 Basketball game is played by two teams having 3 members on each side on a single basketball hoop. The team that scores the highest points after 10 minutes or the team that scores 21 points first is declared as the winner and the game stops.
Hence the objective is to score maximum points within the stipulated game time.
Equipments
3×3 Basketball game is played in half basketball court having dimensions of 15m width and 11m length with only one basket hoop.
The basketball used in these competitions is the same as used in the regular basketball tournaments. For women size 6 basketball (28.5 inches) is used while for men size 7 basketball is used that weighs about 620 gms.
Rules Of 3x3 Basketball
- Each game is played between two teams. Teams consist of three players on each side along with a substitute. Three members of each team should be present in the court for the game to start.
- Game starts with a toss of coin just before the start of the game. The team winning the toss can either choose to start with possession of the ball or can have the possession of the ball during the overtime period; if at all the game goes to overtime.
- A game goes to overtime when both the teams are drawn on points after the end of the stipulated time.
- A successful shot from inside the arc to the basketball hoop is awarded one point and every shot from behind the arc is awarded as two points.
- In case of ball held situation the defensive team is granted possession.
- The game is of 10 minutes duration. The team that scores highest points after 10 minutes or the team that scores 21 points first is declared as winner and the game stops.
- In case of a tie, overtime is provided. The first team to score two points in the allocated overtime is declared as the winner.
- In case of dead ball situation the defensive team exchanges the ball with the offensive team behind the arc.
- The time duration of a shot is 12 seconds. This is also known as shot clock.
- In case the defensive team gain possession of the ball within the arc by stealing or from a rebound, the team must move the ball behind the arc before taking the next shot.
- The substitute can enter the court only in case of a dead ball situation from the line opposite to the basket and that too only after one of the player has made a physical contact with the substitute before leaving.
- Fouls committed during the act of shooting is penalised by awarding a free throw and fouls committed during throws from behind the arc is awarded by two throws to the opponent team.
- If a team commits 7 or more fouls then the opponent team is awarded two free throws for a foul and also the possession of the ball.
- If a team commits 10 or more fouls then the opponent team is awarded three free throws for a foul and also the possession of the ball.
- A player who commits two un-sportsmen like foul is disqualified from taking further part in the game.
- Only one time-out per team is allowed during the match. However umpire may stop the game in case of injury to a player under FIBA rules.
