About World Cup
Football World Cup is the most loved and viewed event on the planet. The event is organized every four years, and the inaugural world cup was organized in Uruguay in 1930, and since then, this event gets organized every four years, with the years 1942 and 1946 being exceptions because of World War – II.
The event is organized by Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), and interested member countries participate in the qualification phase to book their slot for the final 32 countries participating in the tournament.
Among the participating 32 countries, the winner of the last world cup and the host country get automatic qualification berths. The remaining 30 slots, are selected through the selection phase by playing the world cup qualifiers among the participating countries.
The number of teams are likely to be increased to 48 from the next world cup to be organized in 2026 and jointly hosted by USA, Mexico, and Canada.
FIFA Teams Selection
The selection of final teams for the world cup is based on the slots available based on the geographical location of the country after winning their playoff matches with other teams.
Teams from Africa (CAF): 5 teams.
Teams from Asia (AFC): 4 teams plus 1 playoff qualifier.
Teams from Europe (UEFA): 13 teams.
Teams from North and Central America and Caribbean: 3 teams plus 1 playoff qualifier.
Teams from South America: 4 teams plus 1 playoff qualifier.
Team from Oceania: 1 playoff qualifier.
Once the final list of teams gets finalized they are divided into eight groups, each group having four teams based on their rankings, and performance in the qualifier stages, and their geographical locations.

La’eeb is the name of the official mascot for FIFA world cup 2022, which means ‘Super skilled player’ in Arabic. La’eeb will win the heart of every individual, by its youthful spirit, spreading confidence and joy wherever he goes.

‘Al Rihla’ is the official name of the match ball prepared by Adidas, which means the journey in Arabic. This ball is much faster and provides accuracy in shooting.
FIFA World Cup 2022 Tournament
Teams plays in a round-robin way with other teams present in their group. So each team has three games in their group level matches. The winner gets awarded three points while a draw is awarded one point, and a loser does not get any points.
In case, two or more teams are locked with the same points, then the greatest combined goal difference in all group matches is considered as the criteria for ranking. In case, still if the teams are locked in a similar position, the greatest number of combined goals scored in the group matches is considered for deciding the team rankings. No extra time or penalty shootout happens in the round-robin playoff stage.
After the group stages, each team placed second in their respective group plays with the team placed first in the next group in a play-off match. The introduction of extra time and penalty shootout becomes active from the play-off stage to decide the winner.
The winner of each match proceeds to the group of 8, followed by the quarterfinals, the semi-finals, and the finals. A third-place match is organized to decide the third-placed team between the losers of the semi-finals match.
The Jules Rimet trophy gets awarded to the teams winning the world cup. This trophy has been won by Brazil five times, Germany and Italy won the trophy four times, Argentina, France, and Uruguay won the trophy twice and England and Spain won the trophy once.
FIFA World Cup 2022 Stadiums
FIFA world cup 2022 in Qatar will be hosted in eight different stadiums.
Lusail Stadium: The largest and the biggest stadium in Qatar situated 23 Km north of Doha. This stadium is lavishly built having a grass surface with a seating capacity of about 80,000.
This stadium will host five group matches of the teams mainly Group C and Group G, one round of 16 matches, one quarterfinal, one Semi-finals, and the most important world cup 2022 Finals.
Al Janoub Stadium: This stadium was previously known as Al Wakrah stadium in Qatar, having a seating capacity of about 40,000 with a grass surface and retractable roof.
This stadium will host six group stage matches and one match in round 16.
Al Bayt Stadium: This stadium has a resemblance to a tent, situated at Al Khor in Qatar. It possesses a retractable roof providing covered seating for all the spectators and bearing a seating capacity of 60,000.
This stadium will host the opening match of the World Cup 2022 along with six group matches, one round of 16 matches, one quarterfinal match, and one semi-final match.
Khalifa International Stadium: This stadium is also known as the National Stadium and is situated in Doha. This is the first four starred stadium in the world due to its features. Having a grass surface and bears a seating capacity of about 45,000.
This stadium will host six group stage matches, one round of 16 matches, and the third-place match.
Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium: This stadium is situated at Al-Rayyan in Qatar. Having a grass surface this superb stadium has a seating capacity of 50,000 this stadium was constructed by demolishing the existing stadium.
This stadium will host six group stage matches and one round of 16 matches.
Education City Stadium: This stadium is situated in Al Rayyan in Qatar and is located within the university campus hence the name. Having a seating capacity of 45,000, this stadium was constructed for the FIFA world cup.
This stadium will host six group matches, one round of 16 matches, and one of the quarterfinals.
Al Thumama Stadium: This is a newly constructed stadium located near Hamad international airport. Beautiful parks surround this stadium which has a seating capacity of 40,000.
This stadium will host six group stage matches, one round of 16 matches, and one quarterfinal match.
Stadium 974: This football stadium is situated in Doha and was created by the materials retrieved by recycling 974 shipping containers hence its name. This is a temporary venue created only for the world cup and would be dismantled after the event. Having a grass surface bearing a seating capacity of 40,000 spectators.
This stadium will host six group stage matches, and one round of 16 matches.
