Chapter 1
Begunkodar railway station was a haunted station where train has not stopped for 42 years due to some strange incidents. For 42 years any train passing through this station used to increase its speed to cross this station as fast as possible.
Driver of the train used to pray that nothing happens and passengers inside the train used to shut doors and windows of the train compartment when train used to pass through this station. For 42 years this station was considered to be a ghostly station by the railway department themselves.
No railway employee wanted to be posted at this railway station. They would rather want to leave their job or accept any other punishment instead of being posted at this station.
Employees were unwilling to get posted, hence due to helplessness railways decided to close this station that continued for about 42 years and during that time trains used to pass this station at an increased speed.
Begunkodar railway station is situated about 260 kilometers away from Kolkata in Purulia District of West Bengal. This station is about 50 kilometers from Purulia. Begunkodar is a small town and the railway station is also named after its name.
Station started operation in the year 1962 after locals protested and wanted a railway station as they had to travel about 40 kilometers to catch train. Railway track was already passing through this village and hence railways decided to build a station.
Chapter 2
Begunkodar railway station continued its operation up to 1967 smoothly as any other railway station. In 1967 there was an incident and passengers reported that they saw a girl running alongside the train as if to catch it. She used to run so fast as to overtake the train and then start dancing in front of the engine on the tracks.
Sometimes passengers observed the girl dancing on the station. But the railway authorities ignored it and trains continued to ply as usual. In 1967 a station master named Mohan was posted there. One evening he saw a girl running along the train in the station as if to catch it.
He ignores, the next day he saw the same girl laughing and dancing in the station, and continuously for four-five days this same thing happened. He discussed the same with other railway staff members.
He became disturbed and applied for leave stating that he is not feeling well, and went to his native house. After two days Mohan suddenly dies. After his death railway appoints another station master for the station.
Few days after taking charge, he also witnesses the same incident that as soon as the train leaves a girl runs along with it sometimes overtaking the train and starts dancing on the tracks and sometimes witnesses the same girl standing at the station and dancing and laughing.
The girl is only visible in the evening when the train arrived. As this station master was aware of what happened to earlier station master named Mohan, he requests railways to transfer him to some other station and that he will not be able to work in this station and later runs away from this station.
Railway then sends another staff as station master, after few days he also witness the same and quits his job and leaves the place. Subsequently, other railway operating staff also left the place fearing ghosts. It so happened that no staff was willing to come to this station.
Chapter 3
This incident reached to the railway management, and due to lack of willingness of any staff working at this station, railways decided not to stop any trains at this station.
Locals of Begunkodar also started avoiding the station and they used to prefer travelling 40 kilometres to catch train rather than embarking from this station. Hence railway pronounced this station, Begunkodar as ghostly railway station as no staff was willing to get posted there.
Local MLA also agreed about this incident and that whosoever saw the girl fell ill and later died after a few days. With time, trains used to ply over this station but never stopped at this station, instead driver used to increase the speed of the train.
It was believed by locals that the girl that used to run after viewing the train died in a train accident at this same very station. When incident about this station was reported at media, a team of 11 scientists, who were doing paranormal research decided to visit the station and stay there in the night because the girl always appeared in the evening.
The team of investigators spent the night at the station, in station master’s room, in ticket collector’s room, at the outer signal etc. They were not able to detect any such activity.
Chapter 4
After about 40 years or more it so happened that humans spent the whole night at this station. They submitted the report to the government. Locals also believed that the station should re-open as they were facing quite a hardship for catching trains.
So in the year 2009, the first train stopped at this railway station at 11 AM due to the initiative taken by then railway minister Mamta Banerjee. To this day after 5.30 PM, no locals are seen at this railway station. The railway staff leaves for their quarters by 5.30 PM.
In the evening no trains stop at this station, and there is no one after 5.30 PM because it is still believed that the girl runs beside the trains only in the evening and anyone who witnesses the girl falls ill and later dies after some days.
Some ghost hunters spent their night at this station but they were not able to witness any such incident. But this myth is still alive and is believed by locals residing there.
