Chapter 1
This is a story of love and betrayal that led to the fulfilment of the desired objective of a nation. A meticulously planned mission resulted in shutting down the Embassy of a country.
Israel is surrounded by hostile nations eager to attack the integrity of this nation. Organisations operating from these hostile nations like Hamas and PLO (Palestine Liberation Organisation) possesses an extra threat to it security.
This made Israel a nation strong enough to protect its integrity by having the most advanced spying agency Mossad. This agency is known for carrying out daring operations to suppress the attacks carried out by these organisations.
Israel had been requesting countries like Britain and the USA to shut down the Syrian Embassy in their respective countries as it was a hub of people from PLO. Intelligent inputs confirmed that many plots to attack Israel are planned in the Syrian Embassy.
Chapter 2
In December 1984, frequent grenade attacks in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv killed many people, PLO claimed responsibility for these attacks. The agencies were activated to find out the attackers and keep a watch on the activities of PLO.
During the same time, the Israel Navy intercepted a cargo vessel carrying a large consignment of arms believed to be delivered, to PLO for carrying out attacks on Israel. Investigation revealed that this consignment of arms was planned from the Syrian Embassy in London.
In February 1985, the Israeli Air force intercepted a private jet carrying about fifteen passengers from Tunis to Damascus who were supporters of PLO. They forced the plane to land in Israel. These passengers were interrogated individually by Mossad but due to lack of evidence, they had to let them go.
Nezar al-Hindawi was one of the passengers travelling on that plane. During interrogation, it was revealed that he had a playboy character and loved to live an expensive lifestyle and an active PLO member. The agents from Mossad kept a close watch on him.
Chapter 3
Hindawi used to visit the Hilton hotel in London frequently. He often used to hang out in the bar. One day he was sitting in the bar and became attracted to a lady who was serving liquors at the bar counter.
Ann Marie Murphy, an Irish girl who came to London in search of better life. After trying her luck in different jobs, she was selected as a chambermaid in the Hilton hotel. She cleaned the rooms of the hotel during the day and served as a bartender in the evening.
She was pretty and sweet and was perfect in her job but was lonely. One day when she saw a handsome young man approaching her at the bar with a bright smile and wearing a silk suit, she was mesmerised.
Hindawi approached Ann Marie, and it was love at first sight. They both started meeting frequently having a good time together. Ann Marie could not believe her luck to meet such a handsome rich man who would love her.
Chapter 4
Mr Levy, a businessman residing in London, also frequently visited the Hilton hotel. He was an undercover Mossad agent keeping a watch on the relationship between Hindawi and Ann Marie. He knew that Hindawi would require money to support his extravagant lifestyle and girlfriend.
He knew about Hindawi’s character and was sure that someday he would try to get rid of her girlfriend. He would never accept Ann Marie as his wife. In Arab culture, an educated and well-off man would never marry women who worked in a lowly job.
One day Ann Marie admitted to Hindawi that she is pregnant with his child, and spoke to him about marriage. Hindawi knew that he couldn’t get married to such a lowly working lady, he was also scared that if she approaches the police, he would have to leave London. To keep her heart, he agrees to marry her.
Hindawi now started planning the way to get rid of Ann Marie. He wanted to send Ann Marie back to Ireland and was in no mood to leave London and head back home. He required money to fulfil his plans of love and betrayal.
Chapter 5
Hindawi approaches his friend Abu who also was an active PLO member and residing in London to fund him so that he can get rid of Ann Marie, and in return, he would do anything for him. Abu assures him that he would be able to arrange funds.
Abu was an active PLO member but used to embezzle funds from the PLO account. This embezzlement was established by Mossad agents keeping a close watch on him. The agents threatened to expose Abu’s acts to PLO. Due to the fear of exposure and death, Abu agreed to work as a double agent working for Mossad in PLO.
As soon as Hindawi left Abu’s apartment, he contacted Mr Levy. Learning about the desperation of Hindawi, Mr Levy provides the desired cash to Abu to pass it to Hindawi with a plan.
The next morning Abu provides the money to Hindawi to get rid of her girlfriend in such a way, that their objective of destroying Israel is fulfilled. He also explains the plan to get rid of his girlfriend, and he can continue with his lavish bachelor lifestyle in London.
Chapter 6
In the morning 12-April 1986, Hindawi reaches Ann Marie house and confronts her that he want to marry her and give his name to their child. She becomes emotional and hugs him. He further continues that she should get his parent blessings for the marriage.
Hindawi convinces her about their marriage and requests her to visit his parents residing in Israel according to an old Arab tradition of bride seeking the blessings of the groom’s parents before marriage. Ann Marie herself belonged to a traditional Christen family, so she readily agrees to his proposal believing that her future husband also respects his traditional values.
Hindawi hands over a ticket of El Al Airlines flight 016 to Ann Marie along with some cash that he had received from Abu. He also says that he had urgent work in London so he would not be able to accompany her, but assures her that she would be received by his brother at the airport, who would take her to his parent’s house.
Lost in her thoughts and enjoyment of marriage, Ann Marie spends the amount provided to her by Hindawi in shopping over the next couple of days. She also resigns from the chambermaid post from Hilton hotel. Hindawi provides him suitcase and trolley to pack her luggage.
Chapter 7
On 17- April – 1986, Hindawi drives her to the Airport and accompanies her to the departure gate. After bidding goodbye, he returns to his apartment. After her passport verification and clearing the UK security, she waits in the seating area of the departure lounge still deep in her thoughts.
After barely 15 minutes, she is surrounded by El Al security personals asking her to surrender. She could not believe what was happening. The security officers take her to the inspection arena, where her bags were examined. They found about 1.5 kg of Semtex explosives hidden in her luggage.
El Al flight 016 was carrying 375 passengers and the explosives were bound to a triggering device. The explosive was timed in such a way that the aircraft would be destroyed in mid-air. Ann Marie claimed that she was unaware of the contents and that the luggage was provided to her by Hindawi.
She was sent to the custody of MI-5 British secret services, where she explains all that had happened to her. The officers now focus on the Hindawi connection and soon established his Syrian links. They believed that Ann Marie was just a victim of a plan hatched by Hindawi.
Chapter 8
The next day, the media reported the news, of a failed attempt to blow an Airline and how the alert security at the airport defused the situation. Hearing the news, Hindawi left his apartment and took shelter in a hotel in a London suburb under a fake identity.
A day later, the room-service knocks on the door of the Hindawi’s room. The secret service officers entered the room and arrested Hindawi. During the trial, Hindawi retracts from his confession and claims he was manipulated by Israel agencies and was a victim rather than a suspect.
Nezar al-Hindawi and his counsels were not able to establish concrete evidence of any theories he had provided to the court. The Central Criminal Court of England and Wales sentenced him to 45 years of imprisonment for his act, the imprisonment sentence given in British history.
A few days later, British Prime Minister Margret Thatcher orders to close the Syrian Embassy and all the officials to leave England. Following the same path countries like America, Canada, France and other European countries also issued orders to close the Syrian Embassy in their respective countries. Ann Marie was proved innocent and sent back to Ireland where she gave birth to her daughter.
